The TR6 Bookstore

General Automotive Titles

This is the place to look for books about working on automobiles in general. Many of the skills (if not most) required to DIY on a TR are applicable in the general automotive arena; with this in mind, here are a few titles that might be of assistance. If you'd like to submit a review for one of these books (always appreciated!) please click here. To purchase a book, or see more information on it, click on the book title or graphic (if one is available). If a book is listed as out of print, you may click on the book title to ask Amazon.Com to search for a copy for you; for more information, click the Out of Print link in the Price field. Please read pricing policies before ordering!

The Haynes Automotive Books Series

I've found the Haynes books to be useful at my level of expertise, which is to say almost none. Following the advice of the net, I do try to always check their information against at least a second source, especially in the case of the more 'generic' titles (those not written specifically for our TRs). The Bentley manual always rides with the Haynes manuals when I use them. The Haynes books, according to Net general opinion (and mine) offer a more informal 'how-to' for the home user; the Bentley manual is The Book Of Triumph, for Authorized Acolytes Of Triumph/Lucas/Girling Only. It's also written in British. This isn't usually a problem, but the double check helps.

Review: If you're new to carbs, then this book is for you. I'm a complete tyro, and the first read through this book gave me enough confidence to take the tops of my carbs and wiggle around in there. The second read through brought more understanding. The third (in progress) may finally be the thing that serves to get me off my fundament and into rebuilding an old ZS or two to have as spares. Like all Haynes books, it contains line art. There are photo plates as well, detailing the operation of these carbs. There is no apparent bias over carb makes; the Weber, SU and ZS sections are all handled evenly. I really don't know enough (yet!) about the carburetor to tell you if this book is accurate, or way off. I do know, however, that in the two minor repairs to my carbs I've had to make (damper rod, diaphragm) and for tuning information it helped me out immensely. If you're familiar with your carburetors, then this book may be aimed below you; still, it might be handy reference. -J.B.Zimmerman 1997

Other Titles I've Found Useful or Mean To Buy, Having Flipped Through Them!

Well, I've said it before. I'm a student. This means I shouldn't even *own* a TR6, much less collect stuff related to it, according to my financial aid office. Heck with it, they all drive Dodge 600's and Ford Escorts. Anyhow, these are books which I aspire to own, usually because I lost twenty minutes to an hour in a bookstore or in someone's living room while the party was going on in the next room flipping through them.

The Paint and Body Handbook

  • Author: Don Taylor and Larry Hofer
  • Binding: Paperback
  • Publication Date: 1994

How To Design and Build Your Auto Workshop

  • Author: David H. Jacobs, Jr.
  • Binding: Paperback
  • Publication Date: 1993
  • Notes: Not a review, since I don't own it. This one is by Motorbooks international; and for me, it's a double-wanna. See, I *wanna* own it, 'cause I *wanna* someday have enough time and money and space to have a garage, 'cause I *wanna* have a shop. Okay, a triple. Whew.

Building Construction Illustrated

  • Author: Francis D.K. Ching
  • Binding: Paperback
  • Our Price: $25.36 (List $32.95)
  • Publication Date: May 1991
  • Review: This text is essentially an illustrated reference book for all things construction as they would apply to a small building such as a house. Ever wondered what the difference is between a gable roof and a hip roof? Ching will tell you. This book appears to be intended as a reference guide for architects; with plenty of careful, clear illustrations, even I could follow it. :-) I include this book here in the spirit of the last listing, How to Design and Build your Auto Workshop, since you'll probably need a building to put it in. If you don't need a building yet, just wait; a couple of TRs later...J.B. Zimmerman 1998
