I've always, always wanted to do this...and now it looks like I get my chance. I will be relocating from Massachusetts to Santa Monica, CA (for the summer) to take on a summer job at The RAND Corporation. Since I'll be living in Santa Monica, I decided that my TR6 really needs to live in CA, within reach of the PCH, at least once in her life...so I'm taking her on a roadtrip.
I know; why should you care? Well, here's the reason. I'm an
extroverted geek, and I'm bringing my Newton with me. I've decided
that if you folks want to vicariously live a roadtrip with me, here's
your chance. I'll be sending in updates from the road using the Newt
which will give the current trip odometer reading as well as a brief
log entry. These updates will (hopefully) post automagically to the
following page:
http://thepark.mit.edu/offsite/roadtrip.html
...that is, if I got all my perl
right.
So: I plan to depart on Tuesday, 6/9. Expect the first update sometime late late Tuesday. Oh, when I arrive, I'll try to slap the photos from the trip onto the page as well. Then, if I'm in a goofy mood, I'll put up a list of the items in the trunk, and maybe a list of items consumed as well. :-) So hold yer breaths, and hope that TR seatbelt still works...'cause here we go.
UPDATE: The TRip was a success! Arrival in Santa Monica on 6/18 at 4:45 local (Pacific Daylight) time.
The editor of the TR6 Web is a graduate student currently studying the impact of roadtrips on dissertation completion schedules.. He lives in perpetual longing for the TR component he can't afford yet. At times, he has been known to sally gleefully forth across this great land of ours with no plan save 'thataway;' however, the person that informed him of this the morning after may have been lying.
If you're interested in more of his writing (fictional, in this case) it can be found here.
