Nyloc Nuts: Collected Wisdom

Various / The triumphs list

It may seem obvious, but one should avoid using Nylocs anywhere near heat. The plastic is good to about 100C or so and then gives up.

Re: stainless steel fasteners. They are no stronger than grade 2 fasteners for the most part. Their advantage comes in corrosion and heat resistance. For the important stuff, use grade 8 alloy steel with an anti-seize goop.

Bob Lang chiming in here... nuts most certainly come in different grades. What you just bought were either grade two or grade five. They probably are silvery in color. Grade 8 look more goldish, I think they have some kind of cadmium plating... AN364 and AN365 look more like grade 8, I'm sure these are cadmium plated. They don't seem to rust.

Call Pegasus or a local aircraft supply place for high grade/high quality bolts and nuts.

Bolts are marked on the head, no marking is a grade 2, 3 lines is a grade 5, and I think it's 6 lines on a grade 8. On the nuts it is the same.
